Ignition System - general information

Applied to these vehicles transistor-type electronic system is able to produce a much stronger current than that produced conventional ignition systems. When servicing the system, observe special precautionary measures.

All models are equipped with a computerized ignition system, which consists of coil, position sensors and camshaft and crankshaft control module (PCM). PCM controls the installation of the time (timing) ignition performance and spark timing. Ignition timing is not subject to adjustment and change in the position of the distributor to change it does not.

On engines in volume of 4.0 l the position of the distributor is fixed uniquely by the guide groove on its body. Pinch bolt distributor when properly installed passes through this slot. On models volume of 5.2 l pinched bolt mounting clamp allows you to freely rotate the valve, but it does not change the ignition timing. Do not attempt to adjust the ignition timing by turning the distributor.

Drive distributor (its driven gear) including a slider carried by the camshaft. Camshaft sensor disposed inside the distributor and transmits signals to a processor responsible for the synchronization of the fuel supply to the cylinders.

Earlier, the camshaft position sensor mentioned in the list of spare parts dealers as the offices of the company Chrysler assembly plate. Some models are equipped with an independent camshaft sensor, which can be easily removed from the distributor without removing the latter from the vehicle. On other models, sensors are installed camshaft dependent type, requiring removal of the distributor.

Computerized ignition system provides full control of the ignition timing by determining an optimal current value based on an analysis of information received by the microprocessor from the vehicle speed sensor (VSS), coolant temperature, throttle position (TPS) and the absolute pressure in the pipeline (MAP). Ignition timing changes during engine warm-up, during its idle and normal functioning of a warm engine. Operation of the unit performs ignition timing control module (PCM). The structure of this kind of electronic ignition system also includes the ignition, battery, coil, distributor, spark plugs and spark plug wires.

On the issue of the acquisition of replaceable assemblies and components distributor, please contact the dealer branch of the company. Check of the crankshaft position sensor is described in Chapter systems reduce emissions and engine management.
