Checking the adjustment of a tension and replacement drive a belt (every 12 000 km (7500 miles) or time in 6 months)

Check

Drive (or as it is often called, V-shaped, or simply "fan") belt located in front of the engine, and plays an important role in it, and all the auxiliary units functioning. Given the nature of its use and the nature of the material from which it is made, the belt over time is subject to certain physical changes, and its condition, as well as tension adjustment, in order to avoid serious damage to the engine, should be regularly checked and adjusted.

In these models, the car uses a single drive belt belt-type driving the generator, the pump system hydrostrengthening steering and air conditioning compressor.

PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. With the engine off, open the hood and look for the drive belt, which is in front of the engine. Using a flashlight, carefully inspect the entire length of the belt, check for bundles, cracks, separation of the adhesive backing tape, tear and wear strips, cracks on the inner edges of the tapes and other damages and defects. It should be checked the condition of the belt from both sides, which means that each of the reversing of the inspection area of the belt inside out. Unavailable inspection areas of the belt should be checked carefully to the touch. In the event of any of the above defects belt must be replaced (go to n. "To replace the belt ..." or "To loosen the belt ...").
  1. Valid is the presence of a small transverse cracks on the inside of the V-belt - detection of longitudinal cracks or detached pieces, which are a source of extraneous sounds during operation of the belt needs to be replaced recently.

Adjustment

Belt tension 6-cylinder engine is tested using a special meter engages the straight portion of the middle belt between the pulley system hydrostrengthening steering pump and the idler pulley. Compare readings with the requirements of the Specifications at the beginning of this Chapter.

If you have the opportunity to use the meter belt force firms Nippondenso or Burroughs, the figure shows how to use each of them - compare the bar equipment with the requirements of the Specifications (only for 6-cylinder engines).

Adjust the belt tension is done by loosening the bolt axial pump pulley system hydrostrengthening steering lock nuts and locking bolts, and then turn the adjusting screw counterclockwise to loosen the tension force, or clockwise - to increase. Repeat the procedure to obtain a satisfactory result, then shade the lock nut and bolts.

PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. On models equipped with 6-cylinder engines, loosen the screws power steering pulley nave and turn the adjusting bolt tensioner in the appropriate direction to boost or cut the belt force.
  1. On models equipped with V8 engines belt force controls a spring-loaded tensioner and the need for regular adjustment of the tension is absent. If the needle pointer at the rear tensioner is deviated from the reference mark on the tensioner housing by more than 3.2 mm, the belt should be replaced.
  1. Belt Tensioner belt type used on the V8 engines automatically support the efforts of its tension, however, to a limited extent - the arrow pointer on the tensioner housing (B) shall not deviate by more point A on the housing.

Replacement

6-cylinder engines

To replace the belt make all the procedures to prepare for the adjustment of its tension, however, in conclusion, remove a belt from the crankshaft pulley and remove it from the engine compartment. When installing a new belt, track correctness of its lining, as its violation may result in the rotation of the water wheel in the opposite direction. Driving belt routing is shown on the nameplate attached to the fan cover.

Typical gasket belt drive belt 6-cylinder engine.

V8 engines

PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. To loosen the belt, turn tensioner using a socket wrench on the 3/8 inch (9.53 mm) in a clockwise direction. After loosening the belt tensioner is deflected downward. Remove the belt tensioner and carefully release. Put on a new belt on the pulleys, again turning the tensioner. Release the tensioner. Remember that violation of proper routing of the belt can cause the rotation of the water pump in the reverse direction, causing rapid engine overheating. Driving lining the drive belt is shown on the nameplate attached to the fan cover.
  1. Loosen the tension of the belt by turning the tensioner clockwise using the key, worn on its bolt.
  1. Driving lining the drive belt is shown on the nameplate attached to the fan housing or radiator bracket.

All engines

PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Remove the old belt, take with you to the store for comparing it with the new - belts should match each other in structure, length and width.
  2. When replacing the drive belt for correct installation follow him into a pulley groove. Proper alignment of the belt on the pulleys is of great importance for the reliability of its operation.
  3. Adjust the tension of the new belt in accordance with the preceding paragraphs.
