Generator

The engines of Mercedes C-class work with a three-phase alternator. Depending on the model and equipment installed generators of various capacities.

The generator is driven by the crankshaft and the V-belt. The rotor rotates approximately at twice the frequency of rotation of the motor shaft by means of the field winding disposed within the stator winding is rigidly fixed.

With the help of the carbon brushes and slip rings the excitation current flowing through the field winding. This produces an electromagnetic field. The position of the electromagnetic field is constantly changing with respect to the stator windings in accordance with the rotation of the rotor. With this generated in the stator winding phase current. But since the battery can be charged only with direct current, three-phase current is converted to DC using a rectifier diode mounted on the board. The voltage regulator changes the charging current by turning on and off the field current in accordance with the degree of discharge of the battery. Simultaneously, the controller maintains a constant operating voltage of about 12 volts, regardless of speed.

Safety precautions when working on the alternator

When working on the alternator, pay attention to these points below guidance. Of complete disassembly and repair alternator spend in a specialized repair shop.

If you connect an optional battery (for example, to facilitate starting the engine), be sure to pay attention to each other the same pole connected batteries.

When you connect the charger wires connect the latter with the appropriate battery terminals. During charging, disconnect the battery terminal wire from the flexible partition between the body and the engine, and the positive lead.

Do not let the engine run without battery.

Never short circuit the terminals on the alternator and regulator.

Never make polarity of the alternator.

Withdrawal

1. The wire terminal 30 (B +)
2. Wire terminals 61 (A +)
3. Bolts
4. Contact protection
5. Generator

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Disconnect from the terminals of the battery ground cable (-).
A warning

Disconnect only when the ignition is switched off, otherwise it may be damaged by the control device of the fuel injection. Before disconnecting the wires from the battery terminals should also read the recommendations, are available in the relevant sections.

2. Loosen the tension of the V-ribbed belt and only then remove it from the alternator pulley.
3. Lift the front of the car. If there is, remove the bottom cover of the engine compartment.
4. Remove the flange of the generator contact protection (4).
5. Remove the generator of electrical wires (1) and (2).
6. Remove the screws on the holder (3) and remove the generator.

Setting

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Place the generator and tighten the fixing bolts to a torque of 40 Nm
2. Screw the wire to the terminal with a torque of 30 Nm 15 and 61 to the terminal with a torque of 5 Nm Push contact protection.
3. Place the V-belt and pull.
4. Install the bottom cover of the engine compartment.
5. Connect the terminal of the battery ground cable (-). Set the clock, as well as enter the anti-theft code for the radio.

Checking the charging voltage of the generator

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Connect a voltmeter between the positive and the negative pole of the battery.
2. Start the engine. During start-up voltage can be reduced to 9.5 V.
3. When engine speed of 3,000 rev / min voltage must be 13,0-14,5 V. This proves that the generator and control work.

Replacement and check the carbon brushes of the generator / voltage regulator

The voltage regulator is mounted in the holder for the carbon brushes. The carbon brushes can be replaced individually, to do this, however, we need some skill; on average, they wear out after driving about 120 000 km. We recommend to replace the carbon brushes a little earlier.

Withdrawal

1, 4. Bolts
2. Cover
3. The holding protrusion
5. Regulator
6. The projection for connection to the car body
G2. Generator

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Remove the generator.
2. Remove the screws (1), remove the spring clips and remove the protective cover (2). Remove the bolts (4) and pull the knob in the direction (5).
3. Replace the carbon brushes, this wired connection flexible stranded wire.
4. Check the wear of contact rings, if necessary grind them clean and polish.

Setting

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Insert a new carbon brushes (A) and the spring (B) in the carbon brush holder (C) and the solder joint.
2. To the new brush with the soldering tin solder could not rise high in the flexible cores, stranded connecting flexible wire brushes pliers.
A warning

Because raising high tin solder stranded connecting flexible wires are stiff, and the carbon brushes become inoperable.

3. Install a pressure regulator and screw it tightly. When installing pay attention to the fact that the projection for connection to the car body adjoined to the regulator.
4. After installing the new carbon brushes check them can move freely in their holders.
5. Fit the protective cover on the generator and tighten it.
6. Install the generator.
