Turbo Doctor

Rule N1: even think about turbocharger repair at home.

Rule N2: replace the defective turbocharger on the new you can without much difficulty.

Not so long ago there were those times when the car is turbocharged automatically credited to the rank of most sports, the most charged and, of course, the most expensive. Huge distance traversed in the past 15 years and today hardly find a modern diesel engine, which has no close to a similar unit.

Despite the fact that parts of the turbocharger operates at temperatures up to 800 ? C and a speed 50000-85000 rpm, they are sufficiently reliable. However, they wear out and age, and the first units of turbocharging (they became really mass 5-7 years ago) already fail and, sometimes, it is accompanied by serious consequences.

However, not always to blame turbocharger that suddenly the engine began to lose power. The reason for this may be banal clamp weakened and the flying from the pipeline or punched seal.

In most cases, however, the reason for reducing the power of the power unit is faulty turbocharger. You should not try to repair it, but replace it with quite a force in most of the common car.

In general, diesel engines are simpler in this kind of repair than gasoline, due to the simplicity of their design. Most also comfortable all-wheel drive cars, with plenty of space around the engine repair.

The most difficult: "charged" sports models, especially those equipped with dual turbochargers. Standard work on their replacement at the dealer at this case is 12 hours. For models of this complexity, it is recommended not even think of repair in the home, and many professionals refuse to take him, if you do not have a complete set of the required tools and accessories.

Nevertheless, we should not give in and give up in advance. On most models, replacing the turbocharger can be made independently. The main problem will be crowded aggregates engine compartment with limited access to the engine. Sleight of hand and S-shaped key will help here better than any special tools.

As with any work of repair, replacement turbocharger requires concentration and methodically. Nachinte with the fact that free access to the unit from the piping, wiring and other ancillary units. Free space you will need a lot, because it is necessary to remove the four (sometimes - three) nut exhaust manifold, exhaust pipe, three supply pipe and drain the oil, and all the air ducts. Turbochargers with water cooling is even more difficult because of the additional parts.

One of the inevitable companion of life turbocharger: high operating temperatures. As a result, the nuts on the exhaust manifold "welded" almost perfectly still and you want to apply a significant amount of the drug such as WD 40 before working with them. After replacing the main unit must absolutely be replaced with new nuts, made of stainless steel. If they are out of the ordinary steel, the next time will probably loosen them would be virtually impossible.

Studs can be rotated a few turns when loosening nuts or even to twist completely. Carefully check to see whether there has been damage to thread and distortions. If this happens: Restore the threads and screw the studs into place until it stops.

Not all designs turbochargers provide seal at the connection to the exhaust manifold. So do not be surprised if you did not find it when removing this unit in your car. If the gasket still was required to install a new for reassembly.

After removing the turbocharger, check all the liberated oil lines. To do this, ask someone to turn on the starter (removing the high-voltage wires from the engine to prevent it from start-up), and see for yourself that the oil moves freely. Install a new turbocharger, perform this procedure again, so that the oil came to his bearings before the "real" work. Turbocharger bearings without oil: even a second is the worst thing he can experience in your life!
