Check the status, tension adjustment and replacement of belts

Twice a year or every 10,000 kilometers (whichever comes first)

Checking the Status

Belts, straps sometimes called V - shaped section at the front of the engine and play an important role in the operation of a vehicle and its components. Due to the nature of the material and operating conditions belts after some time out of order, and therefore the state should periodically check and adjust the tension force in order to avoid serious damage to the engine.

The number of straps used on a particular car depends mounted thereon assemblies and systems. Drive belts are used for driving a generator, the steering pump, water pump and air conditioning compressor. Depending on the location of a pulley belt can actuate several components. In the shows the location of the seat of the injection engine on the shows how both belts laid carbureted engine, if fitted power steering (servo). If the amplifier is not set, use only one strap. If the air conditioner shown in the the belt between the generator and the crankshaft drives the compressor also. If the belt prozhimaetsya more than specified, it is necessary to spend adjustment.

4 - the crankshaft pulley

4 - the crankshaft pulley

  1. Turn off the engine, open the hood and look for various belts in the front of the engine. Check the belt tension only when engine is cold. If the engine is warm before checking the tension must pass at least 30 minutes.

Some of the most common defects belts (check the condition of the belts very carefully in order to avoid their premature rupture).

  1. Fingers (and using a flashlight if necessary), walk the entire length of each belt, feeling them for cracks and bundles. Also check to see if the belt zapolirovat scuffs and polished sections. Each belt should be examined by both sides, which implies the need to twist him to check the status of the reverse side.
  2. Belt tension is checked by strong pressure on his thumb and determine the extent of his depression. Belt tension is checked at the arrow in the illustration place midway between the pulleys. Measure the amount of deflection line. The rule of thumb is that if the distance between the centers of the pulleys is from 180 to 280 mm, the amount of deflection should be 6 mm. If the distance between the centers of the pulleys is in the range between 300 and 400 mm, the deflection should be 13 mm. If the tension is different from that given in the Specifications, adjust.
The measurement of the deflection of the drive belt with a ruler and meter flatness.
  1. Make sure that the line is perpendicular to the flatness meter

If necessary, adjust the tension in the direction of its increase or decrease is done tensioner. Although the layout is different belts, adjustment is carried out in the same manner. Loosen the bolt on the side corresponding to the tensioner and turn the adjustment screw until the tension does not match the required value. Retighten bolt and check the tension.

To replace the belt, follow the instructions above to adjust, but remove a belt from pulleys.

In some cases, you will have to take more than one belt because of the peculiarities of their location in front of the engine. Therefore, and due to the fact that the belts tend to fail at the same time, they also replace best simultaneously. Mark each belt and the corresponding groove on a pulley to properly install the new belt.

When purchasing a new belt is convenient to take with the old, to be able to directly compare their length, width and design.

Check the tension of new belts after driving several hundred kilometers.
