Mazda 323 is equipped with four-cylinder in-line engine, water-cooled, transverse to the direction of motion.

The cast from gray cast iron cylinder block built. When repairing the engine, for example, because of heavy wear or grooves on the mirror cylinders can be chiseled and polished. Models with petrol engines of 1.4 liters, 1.5 liters, 1.6 liters and 1.9 liters (refer to the OT, B5, B6 SOHC, BPE SOHC) have a cylinder head with the opposite location of the intake and exhaust manifolds with a single camshaft. A camshaft according to the model, actuates the rocker arm through two or four valves per combustion chamber (2 inlet and 2 exhaust valves). The camshaft is driven by a toothed belt. Cars with petrol engines of 1.6 and 1.9 liters (refer B6 DOHC, BP DOHC) also have a cylinder head with the opposite location of the inlet and outlet channels, but with two camshafts. They are driven via bucket tappets 4 valves per combustion chamber (2 inlet and 2 exhaust valves). The camshafts are driven by a toothed belt.

In engines with a cylinder head with an opposite arrangement of the inlet and outlet of fresh air-fuel mixture enters one side of the head, and the exhaust gases produced from the other. By this arrangement ensures a faster gas exchange and high power.

Engine lubrication oil pump is used, which is either located on the front side of the crankcase, or in the sump (engine E). He is driven directly from the crankshaft or via chain. Oil flows through the suction holes and channels to the bearings of the crankshaft and camshaft and to the cylinder bore.

Water pump on engines VZ, B5, B6, BP and PN is located at the end of the cylinder. On engines E water pump located on the cylinder block side.
