Checking / adjusting valve clearance

Engines E1, EZ, E5, OT, B5, B6 before 9/89 MY., PN

To compensate for the different thermal expansions in the distribution mechanism must have a certain valve clearance.

When the gap is too small change timing becomes unsatisfactory compression, reduces engine power, the engine is unstable. In extreme cases, may deform valve seats or valves.

When the gap is too large a very strong mechanical noise, change the valve timing, due to a too short time of opening the engine valve does not develop maximum power, the engine is unstable. Steering valve achieves the desired result only if perfect seal valves have no unacceptable play in the guides and not to slip into the ends of the rods.

Valve clearance is checked and regulated under maintenance. See Section Technology services, tools and workplace equipment, and after repair, or if the distribution mechanism of the noise came. Valve clearance is checked and adjusted to the engine is warm. Operating condition of the engine is achieved by traveling 10-15 km under normal conditions, when the temperature gauge is in the middle of the field.

Gas engine

Check

PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Remove the cylinder head cover.
  2. To establish the piston of 1st cylinder TDC. See Section Removal and installation of a gear belt of engines VZ, B5, B6 (SOHC), BP (SOHC).
  3. For the rotation of the crankshaft include 5th or 4th gear and push the car on a level surface. Another possibility Crank: Raise the front wheel, turn on the 5th or 4th gear and turn the wheel by hand.
  4. Check whether the rocker, belonging to the 1st cylinder, a small gap at the valve, and rocker cylinder 4 fit snugly. If not, the crankshaft must be rotated by 1 full turn.
  1. Check and adjust the clearance of the intake valve of cylinder 1 (E1) and 2-cylinder (E2), the exhaust of cylinder 1 (A1) and 3-cylinder (PP) with a feeler gauge.
  1. Measure the clearance between the valve and the rocker arm. Adjustment values cm. In the table.
  1. The probe must be dragged with force, otherwise adjust the clearance.
  2. Crank one turn (360 ?) further until the mark on the belt pulley will not coincide with the mark on the belt cover.
  3. Check and adjust the clearance of the intake valve 3 of cylinder (EZ) and the cylinder 4 (E4) and the outlet of the 2nd cylinder (A2) and a cylinder 4 (A4).
  4. The probe should be held firmly, otherwise adjust the clearance.

Adjustment

PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. If the value is incorrect, loosen the locknut or conventional ring spanner 1 turn. At the same time hold the adjusting screw with a screwdriver.
  2. Turn the adjustment screw with a screwdriver, and adjust the valve clearance.
  3. Then, fix the adjusting screw locknut.
  4. Recheck valve clearance.
  5. In the same way to check and adjust a backlash of valves.

It is advisable to label the rocker has already adjusted valves chalk.

  1. Install the cylinder head cover.

Diesel engine

Check

PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Remove the air filter, see chap. The power supply system, the carburettor, fuel injection system, Section Removal and installation of the air filter.
  2. Remove the cylinder head cover.
  3. To establish the piston of 1st cylinder TDC, see. Chapter diesel engine.
  4. For the rotation of the crankshaft include 5th or 4th gear and push the car on a level surface. Another possibility Crank: to raise the front wheel, turn on the 5th or 4th gear and turn the wheel by hand.
  5. Check whether the rocker, belonging to the 1st cylinder, a small gap on the valve and the rocker cylinder 4 fit snugly. If not, the crankshaft must be rotated by 1 full turn.
  1. Check and adjust the clearance of the intake valve of cylinder 1 (1) and the 2nd cylinder (3), outlet of cylinder 1 (2) and third cylinder (6) with a feeler gauge.
  1. Measure the clearance between the valve and the rocker arm. Adjustment values cm. In the table.
  1. The probe must be dragged with force, otherwise adjust the clearance.
  2. Crank one turn (360) further until the mark on the belt pulley will not coincide with the mark on the belt cover.
  3. Check and adjust the clearance of the intake valve 3 of cylinder (5) and the 4th cylinder (7) and the outlet of the 2nd cylinder (4) and the 4th cylinder (8).
  4. The probe should be held firmly, otherwise adjust the clearance.

Adjustment

PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. If the value is incorrect, loosen the locknut or conventional ring spanner 1 turn. At the same time hold the adjusting screw with a screwdriver.
  1. Turn the adjustment screw with a screwdriver, and adjust the valve clearance.
  2. Then, fix the adjusting screw locknut.
  3. Recheck valve clearance.
  4. In the same way to check and adjust a backlash of valves.

It is advisable to label the rocker has already adjusted valves chalk.

  1. On the marked spots to put sealant based on silicone (eg, DOW CORNING Q 3-7057).
  1. Install the valve cover and screw with a force of 10 Nm.
  2. Set the air filter, see chap. The power supply system, the carburettor, fuel injection system, Section Removal and installation of the air filter.

Valve clearance

Engine designation inlet outlet
E1, EZ, E5 0.25 mm 0.30 mm
OT, B6 0.30 mm 0.30 mm
PN (diesel) 0.20 mm 0.30 mm
