Removal and installation of a camshaft



Engines OT, B5, B6 (SOHC), BP (SOHC), PN

At the end of the chapter it will be shown on the differences between the diesel engine capacity of 1.8 liters.

Withdrawal

PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Disconnect earth cable from the battery.

This data is erased from the memory of malfunctions of the engine or a protective code of a radio receiver. Before disconnecting the battery should read instructions in Section Removal and installation of the battery.

  1. Unscrew the battery holder.
  2. Remove the air filter, see chap. The power supply system, the carburettor, fuel injection system, Section Removal and installation of the air filter.
  3. Remove the cylinder head cover gasket.
  4. Set the crankshaft in the TDC position of the piston of 1st cylinder. See Section Removal and installation of a gear belt of engines VZ, B5, B6 (SOHC), BP (SOHC).

After that, the position of the crankshaft can not be changed.

  1. Remove the timing belt. See Section Removal and installation of a gear belt of engines VZ, B5, B6 (SOHC), BP (SOHC).
  2. Remove the ignition distributor, see. Chapter Ignition system, Section Removal and installation of the distributor of ignition.
  3. If you have to remove the mechanical fuel pump on the cylinder head, see. Chapter power supply system, the carburettor, fuel injection system, Section Removal and installation / check of the fuel pump.
  1. Loosen the rocker arm shaft mounting bolts in the order shown and unscrew them.
  1. Mark installation position of the rocker arm shafts with chalk or felt-tip pen, remove the shafts complete with rockers and springs and put aside so they will not split up.

Some engines are equipped with hydraulic tappets. In these engines, when removed, no hydraulic pusher should not fall out of the rocker.
