The basic malfunctions of a starter

CAUSE
SOLUTION
The starter does not work
Low Battery
Charge the battery
When connecting terminals 30 and the starter 50 starts
Restore the electrical power supply circuit of a starter
Open or short to ground in the starter
Check the condition of the wires and, if necessary, replace them
Current reduction due to weak attachment or oxidised wire
Clean the contacts and secure the wire
There is no voltage at terminal 50 of the traction relay
Open circuit power starter, which must be restored
The starter rotates slowly and turns the engine crankshaft
Low Battery
Charge the battery
Current reduction due to weak attachment or oxidised wire
Clean the contacts and secure the wire
Carbon brushes insufficiently densely adjoin to a collector or are defective
Check the condition and, if necessary, replace the carbon brushes
The carbon brushes come into contact with the collector
Replace carbon brushes
The working surface of the reservoir is damaged
Grind a work surface collector or replace an anchor
The voltage applied to the starter, at least 10
Check relay Strater or magnetic switch
Faulty magnetic switch
Replace the traction relay
The starter works normally, but does not turn the engine crankshaft
Dirty or defective starter drive gear
Clean or replace the starter drive gear
Worn flywheel
Replace the flywheel
There is no decoupling gear starter flywheel
Dirty or damaged starter drive gear or screw-thread on the shaft of the starter
Clean or replace the pinion gear or starter anchor
Faulty magnetic switch
Replace the traction relay
Decreased elasticity or broken recoil spring
Replace the return spring
The starter continues to run after the ignition key is turned off it
Sticking contacts of the traction relay
Immediately turn off the ignition and remove a wire of weight from the accumulator
The ignition switch does not disconnect the starter
Immediately remove a wire of weight from the battery and replace the ignition switch

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. If the starter does not hear the click of the traction relay and the starter motor does not work, check whether the voltage is supplied to the terminal 50.
2. When starting the engine the voltage at terminal 50 must be at least 10 V. If the voltage is below 10 V, check the electrical power supply circuit of a starter.
3. To check the starter circuit, follow these steps.
4. Apply the handbrake and set gear lever to the neutral position. Turn on the ignition.
5. Using the additional wire cross section 4 mm2, connect terminals 30 and 50.
6. If the starter motor starts to rotate, then faulty electrical circuit power starter.
