Cardan shafts, differentials and bridges - general information

Drive shafts

The PTO shaft is used to transmit power from the transmission (2WD) or transfer case (4WD) to the rear axle of the car. On all-wheel drive (4WD) models of the propeller shaft is called back. The second propeller shaft drive models is used to transmit power from the transfer case and front axle called the front.

Components of a typical front and rear driveshafts used on models 4WD (front end of the front propeller shaft third type is used on some models in 1995 MY. It is also equipped with constant velocity joints (CV-joint), installed with sliding holder crosses).

When driving on uneven road surfaces bridges begin to "float" up and down, so the propeller shafts work in a constantly changing angle of its position in relation to the transmission / transfer case, and suspension bridges. This mode of operation is possible thanks to the inclusion of the shaft (at both ends thereof) universal joints. Changing the angle position of propeller shafts naturally leads to the need for a permanent change of their length, which is achieved through the use of sliding holders frogs.

On models 1993 Vol. in the front propeller shaft universal joint series set in 1310, and in the rear shaft - Joint Series 2950. Two types of PTO units - with one joint and two hinges.

Components of a typical propeller assembly odnosharnirnogo type.

Components of a typical propeller-type double-hinged assembly

1 - The link of the cross
2 - Spring Nesting
3 - The holder of the socket of the ball
4 - Thrust Washer
5 - the needle bearing
6 - Cuffs
7 - Bearing cover
8 - Rear cross
9 - socket holder crosses
10 - a ball socket
11 - The front crosspiece
12 - the needle bearing
13 - Thrust Washer
14 - The holder crosses the propshaft
15 - Locking clip

On models 1994 Vol. both (front and rear) Cardan shafts applied universal joints Series 1310. The newly applied two types of propeller units - with one joint or two.

On models 1995 Vol. Three types of propeller assemblies - one hinge with two joints and CV-joint. CV-joint can not be repaired; in the case of damage to the joint or a protective cover has to change the propeller shaft assembly.

Cut CV-joint propeller shaft third type model 1995 Vol.

On all-wheel drive models in 1995 MY. used three types of front propeller shaft. Shafts first and second types are equipped odnosharnirnymi cardan nodes on the side facing the suspension bridge and the double-hinged units from the transfer case. The only difference between one of these types of shafts from the other is the use of various designs to protect holders of frogs from dust and dirt. In the first type of applied dust cover, while the second uses a rubber cover. Shafts third type sliding holder crosses are not equipped. Instead, they use CV-joint, installed by the front axle. The need to use the slide holder is no longer in view of the ability of CV-joint to contract and expand. Equipped splined shaft inside the CV-joint allows you to keep the length of the propeller shaft in the vehicle at the optimal value. However, the total length of the propeller shaft in this case exhibit during its manufacture. Do not attempt to adjust the length of the PTO shaft of the third type.

In the first type of cardan shafts installed on the model 1995 Vol. for the protection of the cross used dust cover.

In the second type of cardan shafts installed on the model 1995 Vol. for the protection of the cross used rubber boot.

Drive shafts third type model 1995 Vol. instead of moving the holder crosses equipped with CV-joint, installed on the front side of the shaft.

Factory-installed cardan nodes do not need lubrication. Grease sliding holders frogs front propeller shaft drive models in 1993 and 1994 Vol. and the driveshaft first type model 1995 Vol. It must be carried out regularly in accordance with the schedule of routine maintenance of the car (Head of Adjustment and routine maintenance ). Sliding holders crossings such shafts are equipped for this type of grease fitting ZERK.

During installation, the vehicle made a careful and very precise balancing of both the front and rear driveshafts. Because of the latter, each time after removing the shafts must be mounted in place in exactly the same manner as they were previously. Neglect of meeting this requirement is fraught with the development of strong vibrations, and as a result, serious damage the transmission line of the car.

Differentials

Differential located inside the cast iron body, which in turn is an integral part of the assembly of the bridge. Pressed steel cover pribolchena to open the rear side of the body and is used to provide access to its internal components in the process of inspection and preventive maintenance. For transmission of hypoid type is the center line of the driving gear which is located below the center line of the driven pinion. Besides the standard differential design of cars of this brand can be installed also blocks Trac-Lock with blocking (only in rear axles Models 35). If one wheel starts to slip, lose traction with the road surface, the unit Trac-Lock starts to transmit its torque percent opposed. In view of the need to apply for adjustment and overhaul differentials special tools, as well as the presence of certain staff, these works are the prerogative of experts workshop Car dealer branch of the company or Chrysler.

Bridges

The front drive shafts wheel drive (4WD) placed in the sleeve of the front axle 30. Model Bridge consists of two steel sleeves welded to a cast iron central body, which houses the differential assembly. Mounted ventilation unit serving to release excessive internal pressure arising due to thermal expansion and vaporization of the lubricating fluid. The front axle is equipped with drive shafts semi-floating type, which is perceived load bearing hubs. The shafts are attached to the hub bearings with nuts. Maintenance of bearings produced only in the collection, ie they are not subject to recovery. The outer ends of the drive shafts fitted with constant velocity joints (CV-joints) that allows the front wheels to the right and left. In addition, the bridge is equipped with anti-lock braking system (ABS). ABS sensors mounted in the steering knuckle assemblies; Sensors embedded in a rotor shaft near the hub flange. Outside to the differential axle housing cover 30 models nameplate is attached to the data of the serial number and gear ratio. The identification code of the issue date of the bridge knocked back on his sleeve. When replacing the bridge always consider the data.

The rear half-line (all models) placed in the sleeve of the bridge Model 35 which is almost identical in design to the assembly of the model described above 30 front axle. Sometimes the bridge 35 models can be equipped unit Trac-Lock and a limited-slip differential. The serial number and the gear ratio of the differential bridge models 35 again can be find on the cover attached to the differential nameplate. Manufacturing date code is stamped on the back of the sleeve. All these data must be taken into account changing bridge.

This nameplate, attached to the lid of the differential housing contains the serial number and the gear ratio of the differential; number stamped on the sleeve of the bridge adjacent to the nameplate indicates the bridge belongs to the Model 35 (Model 30 bridges nameplate and model number are located at the same points).

For more information about the front axle nepolnoprivodnyh (2WD) models, the sleeves of the front axle 4WD models and sleeves of the rear axle of all models can be found in Chapter Suspension and steering.
