Antifreeze - the general information
| Do not suppose antifreeze hit on open sites of a body and the painted surfaces of the vehicle. Casually got splashes immediately wash off with plenty of water. Remember that antifreeze is highly toxic liquid and its hit in an organism even in small amounts is fraught with the most serious consequences (including death). Never leave antifreeze stored in leaky closed container and immediately collect spilled on the floor coolant. Remember that the sweetish smell of antifreeze can draw the attention of children and pets. About disposal of used coolant, consult on any station, car service. In many regions of the world special points on any reception of working off. In no case do not drain the old coolant down the drain and to the ground!
Recently developed non-toxic antifreeze varieties, but they also must be disposed of in an orderly manner. |
For the filling of the cooling system is commonly used in good and due proportions of the mixture of antifreeze based on ethylene glycol with soft water. The mixture should be resistant to freezing at temperatures down to - 30 ? C, and if necessary, below, depending on the climatic zone arrangement in the region of operation of the vehicle. Besides cold resistance, antifreeze mixture gives corrosion resistance and increases its boiling point.
Draining and flushing the cooling system must be carried out in accordance with the schedule of routine maintenance of the car (see chap. Adjustment and routine maintenance). Use coolant for a longer period is fraught with various kinds of damage to the system, development of corrosion and scaling. If the tap water in a region where the vehicle is operated, is "tight", ie characterized by increased content of mineral salts, to form a coolant use distilled water or rain water.
Before you fill up the coolant in the system, check the attachment of hoses on the unions last - antifreeze has a high flowability and can not leak through the smallest leaks. During normal operation of the engine coolant is not consumed, so a noticeable drop in its level is a sign of external leakage, the cause of which must be immediately clarified and corrected.
| The exact composition of the coolant is determined by the specific climatic conditions. The content of the antifreeze in the mixture should be below 50% and did not exceed 70% - us to map the composition of the coolant, which is usually applied to the container label. Hydrometer to determine the specific gravity (density) of the coolant can be bought in almost any shop of automobile accessories. Try to use only approved car grade antifreeze (see. Specifications). |
