Check and replace the water pump



PERFORMANCE ORDER

1. The failure of the water pump is able to entail the most serious consequences, up to complete engine seizure due to overheating.
2. There are two ways to check the functioning of the operation of the water pump without removing it from the engine. A defective pump must be replaced. The first - the most simple: during operation, the heated-up to normal operating temperature of the engine, squeeze the upper radiator hose. When properly functioning water pump inside the hose must be distinctly different liquid ripple.

Avoid touching the impeller blades cooling fan!

3. The water pump is equipped with a control / vent. In case of failure of the gland begins to ooze out of the hole coolant. In the SOHC engine, remove the timing cover. Prepare a flashlight and a small mirror - a hole located on the bottom of the pump housing. Presence around the hole deposits brownish color indicates a malfunction gland - a slight discoloration of the surface (ring light gray) should not cause concern. On engines DOHC control aperture displays the coolant to the outside between the timing cover the engine block.

4. Failure of the bearings of the pump shaft while the engine is in the front of the howling sound may occur which should not be confused with a whistle, to publish a drive belt with the weakening of the efforts of his tension. On SOHC engine bearing wear can be detected by the presence of backlash with rocking pump pulley (be sure to first turn off the engine and throw the belt pulley). On engines DOHC loosen the main gas distribution chain and remove the cover of the special access to the pump - the access opening provided in the front cover of the timing. Wear of the bearing is determined by the presence of backlash shaft rocking pump drive sprocket
5. Even in the absence of external signs of wear on the final conclusion about the state of the water pump can be done only after its removal and a more detailed examination, - part of the blade on the reverse side of the rotor greatly destroyed as a result of corrosion, which leads to a substantial reduction of pump performance.

REPLACEMENT

Proceed to perform the procedure only after the cooling of the engine! See. Warnings at the beginning of Section Antifreeze - the general information.


PERFORMANCE ORDER

1. Disconnect the negative wire from the battery.

If installed on the car stereo is equipped with a security code before to disconnect the battery make sure that have a correct combination for audiosystem input in action!

2. Drain the cooling system (see chap. Adjustment and routine maintenance). If the replacement coolant made recently, save for later use (see. The warnings in Antifreeze - the general information).
3. Remove belts (see chap. Adjustment and routine maintenance).

4. In the SOHC engine block water pump pulley from turning using a strap wrench and give the four mounting screws. Remove the pulley and the timing belt cover.

5. On engines DOHC remove the bracket intermediate roller drive belt and assembling the right support of a suspension bracket of the power unit with its bracket. Also, remove the cover main gas distribution chain tensioner on the front timing cover. Press the piston into the chain tensioner and insert pin of suitable diameter in the locking hole tensioner. Rotate the crankshaft by 20 ?� counter-clockwise in order to weaken the chain sprocket on the water pump.
6. Turn out fixing bolts and remove the pump from the engine. Check the impeller blades with the back side of the rotor for signs of corrosion and destruction.

7. Clean the threads of the mounting bolts and bolt holes, completely removing traces of rust and old sealant and recover the damaged coils.
8. Make sure the identity of the dimension-type characteristics of the new and the old pumps.
9. Scrape the remains of old sealant from the mating surface of the engine block.
10. Carefully wipe the mating surfaces of the new pump dipped in acetone rag.
11. In the SOHC engine, apply the gasket surface of the new pump is a thin layer of sealant RTV, then gently press the new seal. On engines DOHC install the new O-ring pump, then lightly lubricate it with grease to facilitate the landing of the engine block assembly.
12. Gently pump plant on the regular place, screw fixing bolts and tighten them by hand.

Before screwing bolts grease their carving part of sealant RTV. Make sure that all the provided guide pins are in place.

13. In a few tricks (by 1/4 of a turn for the approach) Tighten with demanded effort. Remember that excessively strong processing by a bolt could damage the pump. On engines DOHC cranked shaft on 20 ?� clockwise with the purpose of processing by a major chain sprocket of the pump, remove the locking pin from the tensioner and refit the cover to access to the pump and tensioner.

Caps should be put on the sealant RTV.

14. Install all other shoot with the aim of providing access components.
15. Fill the cooling system and bleed the air pockets (see chap. Adjustment and routine maintenance). Start the engine and check for signs of coolant leaks.

In DOHC engines at first, until the complete removal of air from the pressure chamber, there may be an increased level of noise emitted by the gas distribution chain. To eliminate noise, let the engine for a while to work with a frequency of 3000 r / min.
