Check of serviceability of functioning and thermostat replacement

Do not open the radiator cap or remove the thermostat to full cooling of the engine! See. As a warning at the beginning of Section Antifreeze - the general information.

CHECK

PERFORMANCE ORDER

1. Before definitively to affirm the opinion of the outlet of the thermostat down, check the coolant level in the system, the state and the tension of the drive belt (see. Chapter Settings and maintenance), as well as the serviceability of functioning temperature meter.
2. One possible cause is too slow warm up the engine (according to the meter reading) is a thermostat jamming in the open position. Replace the new thermostat.
3. In the case of motor overheating touched the upper radiator hose. If the hose is not heated, possibly thermostat is stuck in a closed position, blocking the circulation of the coolant through the radiator. Replace the thermostat.

In no case do not drive the vehicle with the removed thermostat! This may break the feedback on-board processor, which will increase emissions and excessive increase in fuel consumption.

4. If the upper tube is heated, it means that coolant circulates through the radiator properly, i.e. Thermostat open. See the materials section devoted to troubleshooting the cooling system.

5. For a more detailed inspection of the thermostat must be removed from the engine. If the thermostat is open at room temperature, it must be replaced.

6. Tie the string to the length of the assembly of the thermostat (the valve should be in the closed position) and lower the latter into a heat-resistant container with cold water to the same place the thermometer.

7. Place a container on the stove and begin to observe the behavior of the valve, at the same time keeping an eye on the thermometer.

No thermometer, thermostat should not touch the walls of the container!

8. Note the thermometer reading at the onset of opening and fully open valve. Compare results of measurements to requirements of Specifications.

On the thermostat is usually knocked nominal temperature of complete opening of the valve. It may also indicate the beginning of the temperature data value and opening the valve opening.

9. Replace defective functioning assembly.

REPLACEMENT

PERFORMANCE ORDER

1. Disconnect the negative wire from the battery.

If installed on the car stereo is equipped with a security code before to disconnect the battery make sure that have a correct combination for audiosystem input in action!

2. Drain the coolant from the radiator and the engine block (see chap. Adjustment and routine maintenance). If replacing the mixture was made recently, save it for later use.
3. In the SOHC engine, disconnect the upper radiator hose from the water outlet pipe at the intake manifold and from the radiator, and then release the latch on the front of the intermediate timing cover and remove the hose. Disconnect the bypass hose from the thermostat cover.
4. On engines DOHC remove belts and intermediate bracket roller. Also remove the lower radiator hose and remove from the front of the car facing the wall unit water pump drain plug.
5. Remove the thermostat, - try to remember its adjusting position. Get ready for a gathering of a spilled liquid.

6. Remove the thermostat, - note its installation position.

7. Carefully smooth the sealing surfaces of the cover and thermostat housing with a scraper and then wipe them with a cloth soaked in solvent.

8. Put on the perimeter of the mating surface of the cover pillow of hermetic RTV. Expand the thermostat so that, to the valve plug pumping appeared at the top, set it on the regular place in the cover / housing, and within five minutes after applying sealant priboltite cover to the housing.

9. The further installation is made in the reverse order of dismantle of components. Track, that all fixture has been tightened with demanded effort, and hoses are connected properly.
10. Having zastynut sealant for about half an hour, charge the system with cooling and release from it air stoppers (see chap. Adjustment and routine maintenance). Start the engine and check for leaks and serviceability of functioning of the thermostat.
