Drive shafts - general information and check status

The transfer of torque from the transmission to the drive wheels of a vehicle made by means of drive shafts. The inner ends of the two shafts are included directly into the mating slots equipped differential side gears.

Outdoor spigot shafts are also equipped with slots, threaded into the hub of the drive wheels and secured them with large Hub nuts.

The inner ends of the drive shafts are equipped with constant velocity joints (CV joints) of the sliding type, to ensure freedom of assembly as a tilt at different angles, and their longitudinal displacement in a certain range. The main working element of internal SHRUS bearing assembly is double compensation, consisting of ball bearings placed between the inner race and the outer cage. Hinges can be disassembled for cleaning components and checked. In case of fatal defects in the failed joint assembly is replaced.

The outer ends of the drive shafts are equipped SHRUS type Rzeppa (pronounced "Shepp") or "Birfield", also consisting of a ball bearing interposed between the inner race and the outer cage, but the design data of hinges, unlike internal provides only an angular degree of freedom of the components, with total absence of the possibility of longitudinal displacement. These joints can not be disassembled and in the case of infringement of serviceability of functioning must be replaced.

Condition of protective covers of CV joints should be checked on a regular basis. In the case of cuts or cracks defective covers must be replaced, and the joints are filled again with fresh grease. Replacement of covers made after prior dismounting the drive shaft (see. Section Removal and installation of power shafts).

The shops of automobile accessories can be found cases SHRUS split design. Installing these covers can be made in the shafts mounted on the car, that is not recommended, as the replacement covers should always check the internal state of the hinges.

The most common signs of wear / damage to the CV joints, in addition to loss of lubricant, is the occurrence of rattle coming from the hub of the front wheel at the time of turns (usually rattle published radially inner turning wheel). There is also the likelihood of similar sounds coupled with sharply increasing vibration during vehicle acceleration. To check the CV joints should grasp with one hand on the shaft, the other - for the joint housing and tries to rotate components in opposite directions, estimate the value of having a place of play. Have any noticeable backlash indicates the wear of splines or internal components of the bearing assembly. At the same time inspect the shafts for cracks, deformation and other mechanical damage plan.
