Steering gear (a / m without power steering) - dismantling

1. Remove the plug removed from the gearbox and drain the oil
2. Loosen the lock nut of the adjusting screw shaft gearbox cover bolts and turn out gear (see photo).
3. Turn the adjusting screw by rotating clockwise and remove the cover.
4. Remove the pitman arm shaft and remove the adjusting screw.
5. Use the special wrench, unscrew the adjusting nut (photo).
6. Remove the drive shaft of the gearbox with the adjusting nut (photo).

Attention
Do not allow balls to the ends of the bias cut worm. Otherwise will be damaged part of the worm shaft, in the case of wear or damage to the ball nut and the screw should be replaced.

7. Needle shaft bearings bipod shooting is not allowed in case of wear, replace the entire bearing reducer.
8. Turn the adjusting nut and knock with the gland nuts.
9. Pry and remove the seal from the gearbox housing.
10. Wash out all details.
11. Inspect the teeth on the shaft of the bipod, check them for cracks or burrs.
12. Check the condition of shaft splines bipod.
13. Check the cut on the drive shaft, cracks, burrs and other damage. Check up freedom of rotation of the ball nut on worm. Believe me the freedom of movement of balls, slowly turning the shaft in a vertical position, the balls have to roll under its own weight. Otherwise, replace the drive shaft.

16.18 Creating a preload in the bearings of the drive shaft of the steering gear
16.18 Creating a preload in the bearings of the drive shaft of the steering gear

Attention!
When testing, do not allow rolling the ball to the end of cutting tooth worm.

14. Check up freedom of rotation of the gear unit bearings. In the event of jamming, replace the bearing assembly to the outer ring.
15. Before assembly, lubricate all the details. Install new oil seals so that the side with the letters facing outwards. The seals lay the grease.
16. Install the new oil seal on the adjusting nut.
17. Install the drive shaft assemblies in gear nut. Screw the nut on the thread in the gearbox.
18. Create a bearing drive shaft gear preload (photo). To do this, wrap gradually adjusting nut until the moment of resistance to rotation of the shaft will not be equal to the specified in the Technical Data.
Torque is measured by a torque wrench with a scale of a few Nm after rotation of the drive shaft in both directions several turns. To improve the splines engage with the key, insert the key into the head piece of a plastic card.

16.20 Checking the axial clearance shaft Shim bipod 1. 2. Backlash pitman shaft 3. The side gear cover

16.27 Check the time of cranking resistance bipod, gradually turning the adjustment screw 1. Screwdriver
16.27 Check the time of cranking resistance bipod, gradually turning the adjustment screw 1. Screwdriver

19. Lubricate the lock nut ring fixing structure and retighten the adjusting nut it, preventing rotation of the adjusting nut. Again, check the bearing preload.
20. Set the T-shaped cut bipod shaft adjusting screw and check the axial clearance of the screw in the cutout (photo). Compensate for this gap to normal, picking up the shim thickness (cm. Technical data).

16.22 Before installing the cap onto the shaft tighten the screw by turning counterclockwise
16.22 Before installing the cap onto the shaft tighten the screw by turning counterclockwise

21. Insert the shank of the steering gear housing the new oil seal.
22. Turn the adjusting screw counterclockwise, install the shaft cover, screw the nut (photo).
23. Replace the cover gasket, brushing both sides with sealant.
24. Rotate the drive shaft by hand and set the ball nut in the middle position. Install pitman shaft with a screw. Ensure that the central tooth pitman shaft engages the central groove of the ball nut. This procedure does not damage the oil seal lip.
25. Tighten the cover bolts with the set moment.
26. Pour the oil in the gearbox and tighten the plug.
27. Create a preload in the bearing shaft fry, turning the adjusting screw (see photo). Cranking resistance bipod must correspond to the technical data. The moment is checked by the position of the shaft in position bipod drive in a straight line.
28. Tighten the lock nut and recheck the tightness.
