Cleaning and checking the status of a head of cylinders

Thorough cleaning of the cylinder head and valve train components, followed by a detailed check of their status to help determine the approximate size of the upcoming recovery.

Overheated engine can cause deformation of the cylinder head and a violation of the flatness of its mating surfaces.

CLEANING

PERFORMANCE ORDER

1. Scrape off with the mating surfaces of the cylinder head, intake manifold and exhaust manifold all traces of the old gasket material and sealant, - try not to damage the surface. Will greatly facilitate the work of the special use of a softener, followed by pre-impregnated adhering deposits - ask in shops of automobile accessories.
2. Remove from the walls of water channels all traces of scale.
3. stiff wire brush carefully clean all the available space and openings. At strong pollution of channels head cleaning should be entrusted to specialists.
4. "Run" appropriate size tap each of the bolt holes, removing the thread from corrosion products, traces of the old sealant and recover the damaged coils. If you have access to a source of compressed air, blow holes, remove them from the chips and debris.

When using compressed air do not forget to wear safety goggles!

5. Use a solvent and a brass wire brush, clean the combustion chamber of a deposit.
6. Rinse the head solvent and carefully dry it. Using compressed air will significantly reduce drying time and will guarantee the quality of cleaning poorly accessible cavities and holes.

Various types of compositions to remove traces of soot greatly facilitate the implementation of cleaning procedures can be purchased in many shops of automobile accessories. Remember that such funds are usually chemically aggressive and should be used with proper precautions - Always follow the manufacturer's instructions are usually given on the label of the container.

7. In the SOHC engine wash solvent with the axes of the rocker arm assembly. Thoroughly dry the components with compressed air and put them in an organized manner. Wash and dry the solvent valve lifters.

Using compressed air will greatly facilitate the implementation of the procedure (do not forget to wear safety goggles).

8. Wash in solvent and dry thoroughly valve springs, their plates and crackers of cutting locks. Try not to mix up the ingredients.
9. Scrape off the bulk of the valves formed on the surface of deposits, then to an electric wire nozzle completely smooth out the surface of the rods and plates of valves - make sure that the valves are not appeared confused.

Checking the Status

Before deciding on the need for machining the cylinder head, carefully examine its condition. After reviewing the set in this sub material, make a list of those in need of special attention components.

Cylinder head

PERFORMANCE ORDER

1. Carefully check the cylinder head for signs of coolant leaks, cracks and other damage. Cracked head must be replaced without fail. In the absence of certainty in determining the status of the head should send it to the shop to check the service center. If the repair is not possible, replace the defective head.

2. Using a feeler gauge and flatness of the blade type, check the mating surface of the head for signs of strain. If the flatness exceeds the allowable standards by value (see. Specifications), the head should be sent to groove in a mechanical workshop.

One s and the operating parameters of the cylinder heads is their minimum allowable height, which should not be discounted in the process of machining.

3. Check the condition of the valve seats in each of the combustion chambers. In case of cavities, cracks, traces of burnout, the head should be subjected to a special refurbishment, the fulfillment of which is outside the qualification of the average mechanic-fan and should be entrusted to experts of car-care center.

4. Use the special bore gauge, measure the inner diameter of the valve guide. After removing the meter from the measuring sleeves made him a micrometer. Also measure the outside diameter of the valve stem. To determine the size of the gap in the sleeve valve landing subtract the result from the first measurement result of the second. Compare the data to requirements of Specifications. Worn bushings to be replaced.

when using Nutromer enter it until the middle of the length of the sleeve, and then drag up and down. The unevenness of the resistance movement gauge indicates the presence of the taper sleeve. In the absence of certainty in determining the state of the components do not hesitate to seek professional help.

Valves

PERFORMANCE ORDER

1. Carefully check the working surfaces of valves for signs of uneven wear, deformation, cracks, caverns and traces of burnout. Please rate the degree of actuation valve stem. Check for cracks in the rod journals. By rotating the check valve on the bend. Make sure there are no cavities and signs of excessive wear of the ends. Identification of any of these defects requires the delivery of valves for reconditioning workshop in car service.

1 - end (shanks) rods
2 - grooves for the installation of crackers of cutting locks plates
3 - Rods
4 - Working chamfer
5 - Exhaust Valve
6 - The cylindrical part of the plate (belt)
7 - The inlet valve

2. Measure the width of the cylindrical portion (girdle) of each of the valve plates. If the width of the belt is less than the value stipulated in Specifications, replace the valve.

Valve Components

PERFORMANCE ORDER

1. Assess the degree of wear of the end parts of each of the valve springs, a spring check for the presence of cavities. Measure the free length of the valve springs, compare the results of measurements to requirements of Specifications. If the spring is shorter than the lower tolerance limit, it is sagging and should be replaced. Also check for compliance with the regulatory requirements developed by the spring force (implementation of this work is best left to specialists Car workshop). In the absence of certainty in determining the correct state of the springs will replace them.

2. By setting each of the springs upright on a flat surface, check the severity of their trimming. Springs violation trim as sagging (see. Above), must be replaced.

3. Check the plates of springs and crackers of cutting locks for cracks and wear. All are in a precarious state of parts should be replaced to avoid the development of defects in the future.

Camshafts, valve lifters and rocker arm assembly with the axes

PERFORMANCE ORDER

1. Description of the procedures for verification of the state of these components are described in Section Checking the camshafts, valve tappets and bearings. Assessment of the bearing journals of the camshaft must be made before the head is sent to a workshop for service valves. Availability necks scratches, burrs and other mechanical defects of the head must be replaced regardless of the valve train components. When servicing the engine SOHC should also check the condition of the rocker arm valve drive with axes.
2. Replace all the identified defective components.
3. In a large degree of wear of components of valves, it is likely to need major repairs of the engine, reassemble the valve assembly, set them on the regular place in the head (see. Section Assembling the cylinder head) and proceed to the valve maintenance procedures (see. Section Service valves).
