Airbags - general information

Overview

All covered in this manual models are equipped with additional safety (SRS), better known as airbags. The complete set of models from 1995 MY. includes two airbags. The system provides additional protection for the driver and front-passenger vehicle with a strong frontal impact. On models of early years of release is provided only the driver's airbag. The unit includes a module of management SRS self. ECU SRS is located inside the vehicle.

Models 1998 and 1999 Vol. additionally equipped with side airbags, the front seats, which will be triggered when a severe side impact.

Airbag deployment takes place on sensor signals directed overloads treated ECU SRS.

Airbag modules

Driver Air Bag

The module is placed in the hub of the steering wheel and consists of housing, which are placed inside the pillow itself and gasification unit. The gasifier is located at the rear of the housing and provides almost instantaneous filling gas cushion command issued SRS. The electrical signal is fed to the gasifier through the spring contact mounted in the hub of the steering column behind the airbag module.

Signal transmission is carried out via a spring contact regardless of the position of the steering wheel. Igniter assembly inside the gasifier converts the incoming command in a heat pulse that causes the ignition of a powdered mixture of sodium azide with copper oxide. When explosive combustion of powder is released nitrogen fraction of a second the air bag.

Passenger Air Bag

Passenger airbag module is mounted in the dashboard of the car just above the glove compartment. On top of the instrument panel in this case is marked with "SRS". Structure and principle of operation of the module similar to those discussed above for the driver's airbag.

Passenger airbag on the driver's slightly larger volume and is equipped with a steel casing resistant. Decorative cover divided soldered seam, which is at odds with the system operation.

Side airbags

With a compact design, side airbags protect the driver and front passenger in a severe side impact car. Sensors overload side airbags placed in the lower part of the door pillars.

The control unit / Self-diagnosis and additional sensors overload

The control unit / self SRS consists of a microprocessor, which monitors the system and overloading the sensor. Known issues about the system informs the driver by the inclusion of a control lamp. At the same time in the memory of the processor shall be stored a fault code. The car in this situation should immediately be driven away on a car repair shop. The indicator lamp will continue to burn as long as the processor memory is cleared after the corresponding regenerative repair. On most models SRS control unit is placed under the rear of the center console, but can be set and under the instrument panel.

Activating the cushion is only activated while the main and additional sensors directed overloads. In case of failure of battery power in the SRS system is supplied from an independent backup power.

Safety measures

Neglect to observe the precautions when handling SRS components can cause serious injuries!

When servicing all located close to the airbag components always disconnect the pre-SRS:

When removing the airbag modules always keep them on the front part of yourself. Do not place the unit on a workbench or other surface opening airbag down.

In any case, do not use an ohmmeter to measure the resistance of components SRS, - voltage on the meter built-in power supply is able to trigger the airbag.

Before using the electric arc welding on the vehicle, always unplug the wiring SRS (the yellow plug located under the steering column adjacent to the connector combined stalk, - driver's airbag) and a connector behind the glove box assembly (passenger airbag).

Disabling the SRS

Disconnect the battery negative cable first, then positive and wait for at least 10 minutes before the start of the procedure.

If installed on the car stereo is equipped with a security code before to disconnect the battery make sure that have a correct combination for audiosystem input in action!

Driver Air Bag

Remove the access panel in the center of the steering wheel under the assembly of the airbag module and disunite 2 kontatkny wiring connector extending between the module and the spring contact (see chap. Suspension and steering).

Passenger Air Bag

Open the glove box.

At the top of the glove compartment, near the latch disunite 2 kontatkny wiring harness connector yellow connecting the airbag module with the main oblique.

Side airbags

Hooking a special tool, carefully separate the back panel trim the corresponding front seat, - try not to touch wiring yellow.

Disconnect the electrical connector.

Enabling the SRS

The inclusion of SRS modules in the reverse order.

Switch off the ignition.

Connect the battery.

Removal and installation of components SRS

Driver Air Bag

See chap. Suspension and steering.

Passenger Air Bag

Unplug the unit corresponding to the airbag.

Remove the lower section of the trim on the passenger side of the instrument panel (see chap. Body).

Disconnect the 2-kontatkny wiring connector. Remove sealed bolt with a head of type TORX, then gently hooking screwdriver, separate the airbag module from the instrument panel.

The module has a considerable weight, - hold it with two hands

Installation is in the reverse order.

Bolts of fastening of the module to be replaced without fail.

Side airbags

Turn off the system SRS.

Disconnect the electrical connector module appropriate airbags. Remove the two fixing screws with heads of type TORX and remove the module.

Installation is in the reverse order.
