Check of serviceability of functioning and regenerative repair of a heater of back glass

Working element of the rear screen is a horizontal array of electrically conductive filaments, bonded to the inside surface of the glass. Power to the heater is supplied through a large fuse with power distribution unit located in the engine compartment of the car. Turning the heater is made using the switch on the dashboard of the car. Check the operation of the switch (see. Section Check of serviceability of functioning and replacement of the instrument panel switches).

Minor breakages Conductive filaments lattice work item of the heater can be removed without dismantling the rear window.

CHECK

PERFORMANCE ORDER

1. Turn on the ignition and rear window heater.
2. Press the positive probe of the voltmeter to the positive terminal of the lattice of the heating element, a negative dipstick push to the ground terminal. The device must register the battery voltage, otherwise check the condition of the fuse, switch and connecting wiring. If the voltage is normal, however, part of the heater does not operate. Go to the next phase of testing.

3. In order to measure the voltage in the course of inspections described below, wrap the positive probe of the voltmeter metal foil, which is then easily be pressed with your finger directly to the electrically conductive filament lattice heating element. Negative probe, connect the meter to the ground terminal array.

4. Measure the pressure in the central portion of each of the filaments of the lattice. Display 5 ÷ 6 shows the state of health of the thread. A zero reading indicates the presence of yarn breakage between the center and the positive side of the element. Oversize indications half (10 ÷ 12) occurs if there is continuity between the center of the thread and the negative side of the element. Alternately, check each of the strands of the grid.

5. If there is no continuity, connect the negative probe to the mass of the chassis and check again - testimony should not be changed, otherwise there is a violation of the quality of the grounding grid.
6. To locate the break push the negative lead of the voltmeter to the negative terminal of the heating element lattice. Wrap foil positive start probe to probe Conductive thread lattice, moving from the power supply to ground. At the point of breaking the instrument reading to fall from a few volts to zero.

Refurbishment

PERFORMANCE ORDER

1. Restore the integrity Conductive yarns made with a special two-component conductive paste such as Dupont ? 4817.
2. Before restorative repair lattice work item, turn off the heater and let the element to cool for a few minutes.
3. Gently smooth out the damaged portion thread felt, then carefully wipe it with alcohol.
4. Apply two strips of adhesive tape along the thread portion to be recovered.
5. Thoroughly knead the epoxy hardener paste (follow the instructions supplied in the kit).

6. Apply the resulting composition to the damaged area (with overlap of about 20 mm on the edge of the intact strand).

7. Final curing compound occurs after 24 hours, after which the glass can be removed the protective strips of adhesive tape.
