Wheel alignment

Front axle geometry is determined with respect to the provisions of the latest suspension of the car and the road surface. Misalignment of this geometry tends to reduce drivability and increase the rate of tire wear. The number of controlled alignment of the front wheels of the car consists of the collapse, the stick (the angle of inclination of the longitudinal axis of rotation of the wheel) and convergence. Adjustment shall be only one parameter - convergence, and as the front and rear wheels. The values collapse and stick out of the front wheels must be checked on a regular basis to assess the degree of wear of suspension components and steering gear.

Wheel alignment is one requiring great precision measurement procedures for quality performance of which requires a special, quite bulky and expensive equipment. Implementation of this work is the right thing to entrust the professional mechanic car service. Here, for a common understanding, are the definitions of each of the controlled wheel alignment of the car, the knowledge of which will facilitate communication with the owner of the car service center personnel.

Convergence is the quantity information to each other of the front edges of the wheels of the car. Such a violation of the parallelism of the wheels to minimize tread wear due to skidding when cornering. At zero convergence distance between the front edges of the wheels is equal to the distance between their rear edges. Normal convergence is not usually exceed a fraction of an inch (1 inch = 2.54 cm). Adjusting the convergence of the front wheels is carried out by adjusting the length of the track rod by changing the position of their tips. To adjust the convergence of the rear wheels is a special adjusting cam bolt screwed into the inner end of the control arm rear suspension. Infringement of adjustment of convergence leads to accelerated wear of tire tread by slipping them on the pavement.

It called the collapse of the angle of inclination of the plane of the wheel relative to the vertical. If the wheels are inclined upper edges outward collapse is called positive, and vice versa. The magnitude of the collapse is measured in degrees. A correct control of the collapse determines the size and position of the contact with the road and tread to compensate for changes in geometry of the suspension at the time of cornering and when driving over uneven pavement. On considered models of cars the ability to adjust the collapse is not provided.

It called coasting angle to the vertical axis of rotation of the wheel in the plane of the latter. If the axis of rotation is tilted back, the stick is called positive, on the contrary. Adjust the coasting the front wheels is carried out by adjusting spacers, push rods placed under suspension.
